Refined butter, besides being without the characteristic nutty scent of shea butter and being finer and whiter, is also more processed and even chemically treated so that shea nuts open better and faster (also using hexane). During refinement, unfortunately, important bioactive beneficial substances are removed (more than 70%).
Therefore, if we want to use shea butter for its effects on skin, it is best in its raw, unrefined state. Unrefined butter is great for dry skin, acts as a barrier against skin moisture loss (which is important for people who suffer from e.g. psoriasis, eczema or extremely dry skin). It has anti-inflammatory effects.
