Hyperpigmentation - an aesthetic problem

What causes pigmented spots?

Pigmented spots most often appear on the face, hands and shoulders, that is, areas that are exposed to increased levels of sunlight.

Besides genetic predisposition, there are several factors behind the development of pigmented spots:

  • excessive sun exposure of the skin
  • use of hormonal pills, medications, antibiotics, dietary supplements
  • use of perfumes and their combination with sun.

Pigmented spots can also be a manifestation of certain diseases, e.g. in liver and kidney diseases. At the same time, pigmented spots affect up to 90% of people over 50 years old, regardless of skin type.

Prevention

If we want to prevent the formation of pigmented spots and prevent their spread or darkening, we recommend thorough sun protection. Sunlight in reasonable amounts is very important for our body, as it contributes to the formation of vitamin D, excessive sun exposure can already have harmful consequences.

Be careful with herbs, teas and perfumes

Some essential oils (especially citrus) or oils (St. John's Wort) and teas from plants (also e.g. St. John's Wort) are photosensitive, it is necessary to avoid their use in combination with sun, as they can cause the formation of pigmented spots on the skin.

When using medicines and nutritional supplements, we recommend carefully reading the package leaflet to see if photosensitivity of the product is mentioned.

We don't have to avoid the sun, but rather pay more attention to using creams with a protective factor according to skin type, wear light clothing that covers the most exposed parts of the body during the hottest hours (between 11 and 3 PM), wear a hat, sunglasses...

Do not apply perfume on areas that are exposed to sunlight.

What helps with pigmented spots?

Pigmented spots are primarily an aesthetic problem that can be solved.

It's ideal to start a treatment course in autumn or winter. During spring and summer, you should use creams with a higher protection factor to prevent the formation of pigmented spots during a course with retinoids or other preparations more sensitive to sun exposure.

RETINOLS / RETINOIDS

Retinoids work by stimulating the skin to accelerate the cell renewal process to promote the growth of new cells. At the same time, they stimulate collagen production and tighten the deeper layers of skin, which are the source of wrinkles. Retinoids also regulate skin pigmentation, lighten dark patches, pigmented spots and help against clogged pores in acne.

VITAMIN C

Vitamin C is an effective antioxidant that brightens skin tone and reduces signs of aging. It also supports mechanisms in the skin to promote the formation of collagen and elastin, making the skin firmer and dynamic wrinkles finer. Vitamin C reduces the production of melanin, which is responsible for the formation of pigmented spots.
